Ceramides and their significant role in helping the damaged skin
Ceramides are naturally present in our skin and play a major role by providing an improved adhesion among the corneocytes. They contribute to this to regulate the skin barrier effect improving long-term water retention and protection from the external environment. Moreover, these activities do not present any negative influence on the normal cell physiology and do not occlude the skin either, as it is an endogenous component.
With the expansion of skincare research to develop more potent active ingredients such as AHAs, BHAs, enzymes, vitamins and pro-vitamins, oxygen, ceramides, and liposomes, the field has gained credibility and respectability with products making claims which are, to some extent at least, scientifically verifiable. Skincare products now offer ‘science and technology’ and researchers continue to look for ingredients that will fuel the growing skincare market.
When it comes to ceramides, the main difficulty for the application of ceramides in cosmetic formulas is the requirement of high process temperatures (above 90°C), and the necessity to solubilize into solvents (such as synthetic esters, stable at high temperatures). This step, very constraining, is crucial though, as only dissolved ceramides are useful to the epidermal barrier effect.
