Oils, fats, esters, emollients, is there a difference?

Oils, fats, and waxes form an important, but cross section of raw materials that can find uses in most types of cosmetic and personal care products. They are used as emollients which impart protection, lubrication and a pleasant feel to the skin. They could also be used as consistence factors to regulate both the physical consistency of a product and its spreading on the skin during use or also as solubilizers. which impart solubility to otherwise insoluble materials in skin care products.

As super fatting agents they replace skin fats stripped out in a washing process of cleansing preparations and hair conditioners. They could also be used as dispersing agents, consistency factors in decorative cosmetics. The other major role is their use as essential building blocks for the manufacture of further oils, fats and waxes, and surfactants. They are different classification of oils in different industries, but the most common ones are as follows:

Oils

  • Natural oils
    • ‘True’ oils
    • Natural derivatives
  • Synthetic oils
    • Petrochemical derivatives
    • Silicones
  • Essential oils
    • The natural and synthetic groups that are important raw materials in perfumery.

Fats
Fats are soft, semi-solid organic compounds. The only difference between fats and oils is that
fats are solid at ambient temperature. In other words, a fat is a high melting point oil. Fats can
then obviously be classified in the same way as oils.

  • Natural fats
    • ‘True’ fats
    • Natural derivatives
  • Synthetic fats
    • Petrochemical derivatives
    • Silicones

Oils and fats obtained from both the plants and animals are esters of glycerine and fatty acids.
These esters are in the form of triglycerides.
